This is the first Resident Evil film I've seen, and it's not as bad as I'd been led to believe Horror movies. Written and directed by Paul W Horror movies.S. Anderson -- who returns to the series for the first time since the original film -- this fourth film has an interesting look, and some good, streamlined action sequences, apparently slowed down and clarified for the benefit of 3D. It also has an interesting Hawksian element in which several humans with opposing points of view come together to battle a greater evil. If Umbrella could somehow harness Alice's DNA anomaly, well, then a joyful "broo-ha-ha" could once again ring out through the hall of its wicked, underground headquarters Horror movies. But Alice isn't cooperating. She's more interested in saving the remnants of humankind and, uh, finding a way to fold up Umbrella permanently. Only once does the strain show: the invading French turn up on the English coast in a sequence rather obviously lifted from Saving Private Ryan, even down to the carnage in the water Horror movies. (It's as if Scott is saying: anything you can do, Spielberg Horror movies...) Previous to Inception, Christopher Nolan has directed six films, none of which I dislike, and three of which I outright love, including his last two, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. His movies are often puzzle-like and require great cerebral attention, which is part of what makes his works so rewarding to watch Horror movies. But one might hesitate to call them "entertaining" in the common sense of the word Horror movies. Nolan's films often reach into the dark recesses of men's minds, and the view there is so pessimistic and gloomy that it wouldn't be a stretch to say his movies are missing a "feel-good" quality. They're cool, even slick, but could they be called fun? One thing that isn't a secret about this spy drama, having been divulged by the entertainment press, is that Jolie's role was originally written for Tom Cruise. If you hadn't read it, you might pick it up from the design and staging of the close combat sequences Horror movies. Jolie puts every muscle in her body into making the fight concepts of the film credible, and she's well aided with sharp editing and sound effects. With this material, director and opportunity, she exceeds even the athletic requirements of her "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" series Horror movies. The babe is terrific Horror movies. But, she isn't Matt Damon Horror movies.
